1:1 & Group Retreat: Recovering from narcissistic abuse

Maybe you have just acknowledged the signs that you are dealing with a narcissist and know it’s time to get out of a relationship, situation or job position – or you may have been out for a while, maybe even years. No matter what, the bruises on your mind and soul from an encounter with a narcissist need to be cared for, so they don’t end up being permanent marks of hopelessness, bitterness and life wasted.

Our retreats for those recovering from narcissistic abuse is a safe haven to land among people who have experienced on their own mind, body, soul and wallet (as is often the case) just how devastating such an encounter is.

We have experienced abuse from several narcissists, and the last one nearly destroyed both our relationships and all our hopes and dreams. But we have done the work and come out on the other side after seven years of healing – to a place where we can finally feel grateful for where the journey took us. And we will be happy to act as a stepping stone and give you some powerful tools to use on your continuing healing journey.

Narcissistic abuse – what does it feel like and how to heal.

What does it feel like?

You probably feel like you’re going crazy. You used to feel powerful and have control over your life, but suddenly you either question everything – or everyone around you questions everything you do. You see things happening that feel deeply wrong, yet when you try to talk to people about it, they tell you it’s your fault, you’re imagining things or give you another explanation that you accept but still feel unsure about. It’s like everybody sees things differently from you. Even those closest to you encourage you to try different new strategies for making the relationship work better, and you try them all. You do your best, but you feel more and more abused, confused and numb. It’s like your whole world is turned upside down. You don’t know who to trust anymore, and the person you trust the least may even be yourself.

You finally realize it’s not you. You leave the situation but keep being pulled back into the drama. You try to heal but the wound keeps being opened. Everybody around you wants you to ‘just get over it.’ You feel lost, alone, deeply betrayed and helpless. You feel that everyone from your friends to your colleagues to the structures of society is on the side of the narcissist, encouraging them to just keep doing what they do.

You need help but it’s hard to find since only few, if anyone, seem to understand you.

The medicine

An encounter with a narcissist can be one of the most powerful rites of passage, but it can also easily lead to complete destruction. It takes willpower and determination to make it back to life and loads of softness and self-acceptance. For many, it takes turning to God.

The thing that makes narcissistic abuse extra hard to recover from is the lack of acknowledgement from society and those around you. Only very few – if any – understand what you have been through and how much you have been wronged. You want justice so much, but you must accept that you will never have it. On the contrary, you can easily end up locking yourself up at home while everybody else goes partying with your ex or your sister or still go to the job where you were bullied out by your narcissistic boss. Even your own kids or parents may believe the narcissist’s stories that you are the crazy one. There are lies being shared about you in town or maybe in the media or online. Even people close to you distance themselves from you. Everybody just wants life to continue as normal, and very few have the guts to take side against the narcissist, as their games are so difficult to understand. ‘There is some kind of misunderstanding between them’, most people probably think as they are watching the drama unfold from outside. You probably thought so too many times. ‘There must be something I did wrong, otherwise things wouldn’t be like this’, you think, while reality is there is absolutely NOTHING you did wrong. You are a different kind of person than the narcissist and you don’t see what’s happening because you play by a completely different set of rules than he/she does. And in this truth lies the medicine; first to be around people who can acknowledge your story and remind you of this over and over again. You did nothing wrong. You were abused for a game of power, prestige, control – and probably money or something else of material value – you did not know you were a part of. And then you integrate this truth as complete and full self-acceptance, no matter how much damage was done to you and those you love because you got entangled with a narcissist. It was not your fault.

The next steps on your healing journey are to recover from the severe damage that has been done to your self-esteem, your trust in people, your world-view and your nervous system. You most likely suffer from complex PTSD, which shows up in a range of different ways. You may have health problems, like rashes and digestive issues. Your once so big heart may be closed so you are afraid to give and receive love. To recover from narcissistic abuse is not something you do in a week or two, it will most likely take many years. The right kind of support is crucial, and you will need to get it from people who know what you have been through. Not many do.

What to expect from our retreats

There is no quick fix to healing from narcissistic abuse, but here is a short-cut: To be around people who fully hear you, who fully share your pain and feelings of injustice, and who models what it’s like to be back on track in your life.

We will be happy and honoured to be there for you on your journey back to health, empowerment and happiness.

During an ‘emergency retreat’ we offer you a safe place to land, to feel embraced and at home. You are among people who acknowledge your story no matter how crazy it sounds to those around you. We help you with tools to get your nervous system back on track – healthy food, grounding routines, herbal medicine, lots of time spend in nature, deep and encouraging conversations.

Through 1:1 sessions and/or walk-and-talks we help you find back to the essential answers to questions like who you can trust, who you are and what you want.

We can help you set up any kind of healing modality you feel may help you on your journey. Almost anything is possible here by the lake.

More information / FAQ’s

About the hotel and our food

Highly vital, organic food is our specialty. We spend a lot of time searching for and selecting the very best ingredients to use in our kitchen. We also grow some ourselves. Our all-natural dairy products and ’criollo’ eggs are from a 5-cow-farm, most of our veggies are from IMAP, a project focusing on introducing permaculture to local farmers, and our lettuce and leafy greens are picked up daily at Eugenio’s – a guy who never learned to write or read. But his father taught him to grow food. His organic garden in the middle of San Pedro doesn’t have a name, homepage or phone number. You come and he harvests for you. Easy. The same goes for meat – chicks are from a regenerative farm and the beef is from cows who had a good life grazing on the mountains.

We apply the same attention to detail to our interior design. All our fabrics for the rooms are organic and/or handmade by local weavers and seamstresses. We work with local potteries, furniture makers, basket weavers and other craftsmen for a personal, natural feeling in all design details.

About the area around the hotel

Hotel San Pedro La Laguna is situated in a tranquil part of the village with a 15-minute walk to the centre of town and a short walk to wild, undisturbed nature with endless hiking- and running paths.

Each village around Lake Atitlán has a strong and real market culture with Mayans selling and trading local produce, fabrics and other things needed for daily life. The lake is also one of the hotspots in the world when it comes to all kinds of healing modalities. Everything you can or can’t imagine is offered here: From a good massage to yoga sessions, herbalism classes, plant medicine journeys, akashic records readings, cacao ceremonies, kirtans – you name it! A short but scenic boat ride will take you to most of it.

We are only 2 hours from the Pacific Coast which makes it easy to combine the retreat with tropical adventures, wave surfing and much more. A longer drive will take you to areas with jungle, Mayan pyramids etc. Guatemala is a small country with a very big diversity in both nature and culture.

About the weather

The area around Lake Atitlán is called ‘The land of eternal spring’ because the weather is always nice here. Rainy season is usually in the months of June, August, September and October – but really there are no days here that are not nice in their own way. We like to say that every day is a beach day – at least for a few hours if not the whole day. The temperature is always around 20-25 degrees at daytime and 5-10 degrees lower at night. The rain showers and thunderstorms during rainy season can be quite spectacular, but they don’t last that long, usually. For us, they are a nice way of having the air cleared and the dust washed away once in a while. The rainy season is also when everything is most lush and green.

About safety

Many people are worried about safety in Guatemala. While some areas in the capital are dangerous and a few of the roads around us are not recommended to use by night – we will say that San Pedro is probably one of the safest places to be in the entire world. The Mayan culture and slow pace of life is infused into the DNA of the town, which makes traffic flow easily and criminal rates at an absolute minimum. In addition to the local, very friendly police, the Pedranos (people from San Pedro) also have their own law-enforcement system that still use e.g. public embarrassment and eviction from the town as some of the very strict means of keeping the town free of thefts and burglary.

The trip from the airport to the lake is done by professional shuttle services. There are no dangers on the way.
