All-inclusive holidays

at Hotel San Pedro La Laguna

Welcome to a holiday that is our take on the perfect getaway with or without kids: Great food the makes you feel good, amazing nature, a chilled and inspiring atmosphere, something exciting to do for all age groups and the possibility for parents to spend time alone too. Comfortable rooms carefully decorated with natural, organic and handmade items. Plus: The weather is always good!

Lake Atitlàn is a hotspot for regenerative farming, alternative thinking and for self development in any form imaginable. A place that was considered to be on the list of the 7 wonders of the World, that is still free of heavy mainstreams tourism and with a strong Mayan culture. It’s exotic and fun.

We truly couldn’t think of a better way to spend a week off reconnecting with loved ones, with nature and with ourselves.

About the experience

Imagine starting each day with coffee from the volcano behind you with fresh milk from a 5-cow farm in the neighbour village (delivered on motorbike by our amigo, Nicolas), local bananas and other exotic fruit in a quality that is just seven levels above what you have tried before. Cold coconut water, fresh fruit ripened by the sun and a killer omelette, eggs Benedict or whatever inspires the kitchen that day. Maybe you will be lucky and have a visit by a hummingbird or two.

Afterwards, you grab a towel and take a 2 minute walk down to a sandy beach to have a swim in a legendary, magical lake. You probably have the beach for yourself, if it’s not washing day for the local women.

Then you are ready for the day! It can be spent chilling in our cozy garden while looking over the lake, joining a ceremony or yoga session in a nearby village, or it can be an adventure to beautiful surrounding forests or villages, travelling by boat, by horse, a tuk tuk or in the back of a pick-up truck. The lake is full of amazing nature and cultural experiences and it’s still so remote that you share the experience with very few other tourists – if any.

A real experience in every sense of the word

San Pedro is exotic. The Mayan culture is still very strong and there are plenty of ways to experience it. The market is for real and as a tourists you’ll be the attraction - not the other way around. The locals are bringing eggs from their chicken, bananas and avocados from the volcano and tropical fruit from the coast which is only 2 hours away. The tuk tuks are pimped up beautifully and they circle around each other like bumper cars. The fishermen are rowing their boats setting out nets like they have done for generations. You are surrounded by mountains, volcanos and a legendary, magical lake. Nothing here is done for the show - but it is a true feast for all senses.

Each night we serve a meal from our outdoor kitchen with curated non-alcoholic drinks or local, artisanal beer, maybe a ‘cigarette’ rolled on medicinal herbs from our garden, the sound of cicadas or good music from the kitchen. With 8 double rooms it will be personal and intimate. From our roof terrace there is full view to Volcano San Pedro, the lake, starry nights or whatever the day and night has to offer.

The list of things to experience around here is endless. Take a half hour walk at the foot of the volcano to come to a remote beach to use as your picnic spot. Or take a guided walk in the cloud forest while the sun rises to see the Quetzales – a very rare and for Mayans holy bird with its parrot-like colours and weirdly long tail The trip includes embarking a boat in the early morning when it’s still dark and a ride in the back of a pick-up. It’s all a true unforgettable experience. A ride on horse back on the volcano with stunning views over the lake is also something special.

Each village around Lake Atitlán has a strong and real market culture with Mayans selling and trading local produce, fabrics and other things needed for daily life. The lake is also one of the hotspots in the world when it comes to all kinds of healing modalities. Everything you can or can’t imagine is offered here: From a good massage to yoga sessions, herbalism classes, plant medicine journeys, akashic records readings, cacao ceremonies, kirtans – you name it! A short but scenic boat ride will take you to most of it. The Tzutujil (the Mayans in San Pedro) are very open and warm-hearted so feel free to join a traditional fire ceremony.

Our experience from other projects is that our guests are usually quite like-minded souls, and it’s a good place to find new interesting friends from all around the world.

Holidays that are fun for the entire family

Our holidays are for all age groups. You can join us as single, couple and as a family of several generations - we promise there will be something here for everyone.

We offer specific weeks that are more oriented towards families with children - we call them ‘family holidays’. But we assure that anyone from toddlers and babies to teenagers and grand parents - and any age in between - will find something to enjoy here.

We are parents of 4 girls in all ages, so we know how hard it can be to find a holiday that makes everyone happy. This meets our personal criteria for a successful holiday with or without kids: Good food the makes you feel good, amazing nature, chilled, inspiring, something exciting to do for all age groups and the possibility for parents to spend time alone too.

During our family holidays we will have daily nanny service and other kids will come. There are plenty of stuff to do. The neighbour village just opened a small water park, you can go swimming in a waterfall most of the year, there are weaving classes and much more. We can also arrange that your kids can go play football with the locals, or why not a trip up in the mountains in the back of a pickup truck? For the teenagers there is a thriving party scene a short and safe Tuk Tuk ride from the hotel, as well as activities such as horse riding, yoga, water activities and circus classes.

Hotel San Pedro La Laguna is situated in a tranquil part of the village with a 15-minute walk to the centre of town and a short walk to wild, undisturbed nature, empty paradise beaches and endless hiking- and running trails.

Whatever you are into - we probably have it close by

Lake Atitlán is surrounded by little villages with all their special things to experience. All villages and town are still mainly populated by local Mayan people, who speak their different original languages, make things by hand and shop at the many markets. Every village has both daily markets and weekly or bi-weekly larger markets. Some villages have more foreigners that offer different healing modalities, concert venues, food experiences and more. San Marcos La Laguna is the most famous of these. The transportation between the villages is mainly done by boat, while shorter distances are done by tuk tuk.

The lake is also a hotspot for regenerative farming so if you want inspiration for true sustainability from people who get their hands dirty in the soil, there is plenty. We recommend it!

If you are into canopy trips/zip lining, bathing in waterfalls, hikes and climbs, horse riding, paragliding or other adventurous activities, there are lots of those options too nearby.

We are only 2 hours from the Pacific Coast which makes it easy to combine the holiday with tropical adventures, wave surfing and much more. A longer drive or a short flight will take you to areas with jungle, Mayan pyramids etc. Guatemala is a small country with a very big diversity in both nature and culture.

About the hotel and our food

About our food

Highly vital, organic, local food is our specialty that we have been working with for over 2 decades, write books about and just have at the centre of everything we do. We spend a lot of time searching for and selecting the very best ingredients to use in our kitchen. We also grow some in our little garden. Our all-natural dairy products and ’criollo’ eggs are from a tiny farm in neighboring village Santiago, most of our veggies are from IMAP, a project focusing on introducing permaculture to local farmers, and our lettuce and leafy greens are picked up daily at Jeronimo’s – a guy who never learned to write og read. But his father taught him to grow food. His organic garden in the middle of San Pedro doesn’t have a name, homepage or phone number. You come and he harvests for you. Easy. The same goes for meat – chicks are from a regenerative farm and the beef is from cows who had a good life grazing on the mountains. Chocolate is from a p

About the hotel

We pay the same kind of attention to our interior design as to our food. All our fabrics for the rooms are organic and/or handmade by local weavers and seamstresses. We work with local potteries, furniture makers, basket weavers and other craftsmen for a personal, natural feeling in all design details.

The hotel has 8 rooms with each their double bed and bathroom with hot water and handmade, ’lake safe’ toiletries.

We have Starlink internet and batteries to make sure everything is up and running when the power goes out. That happens sometimes.

The ’living room’ is a 100 m2/1.000 sq.ft. room with plenty of space for sitting by the long table, in circles, dancing or playing games.

Outside is our cosy garden and outdoor kitchen.

Practical information

About the weather

The area around Lake Atitlán is called ‘The land of eternal spring’ because the weather is always nice here - without ever being hot. The temperature is always around 20-25 degrees at daytime and 5-10 degrees lower at night.

Rainy season is usually in the months of June, August, September and October – but really there are no days that are not nice in their own way. We like to say that every day is a beach day – at least for a few hours if not the whole day. The rain showers and thunderstorms during rainy season can be quite spectacular, but they don’t last that long, usually. For us, they are a nice way of having the air cleared and the dust washed away once in a while. The rainy season is also when everything is most lush and green.

About safety

Many people are worried about safety in Guatemala. While some areas in the capital are dangerous and a few of the roads around us are not recommended to use by night – we will say that San Pedro is probably one of the safest places to be in the entire world. The Mayan culture and slow pace of life is infused into the DNA of the town, which makes traffic flow easily and criminal rates at an absolute minimum. In addition to the local, very friendly police, the Pedranos also have their own law-enforcement system that still use e.g. public embarrassment and eviction from the town as some of the very strict means of keeping the town free of thefts and burglary.

The trip from the airport to the lake is done by professional shuttle services (if not by helicopter). There are no dangers on the way.

Things to do, an overview:

Beaches: ‘Our’ beach is a few minutes walk away, and there are plenty of beautiful, sandy beaches to choose between around the lake, both within walking distance and accessible by boat. You will only rarely meet other people at any of the beaches. The lake is excellent for swimming and paddle boarding as it is usually quite still.

Markets: Every day there is a new market somewhere nearby, and they are as authentic as it gets. You can find handmade items like weaved baskets, fabrics, clothes, furniture and clay pots, and all kinds of foods, including street food, on the markets. Meeting other tourists at these markets is very rare, unless you are at a few spots that we will help you steer away from.

Cultural activities: Mayan cooking classes, fire ceremonies, traditional medicine making, weaving- and natural dying classes and lots of other things are offered here. We will also be happy to set you up with Mayan friends who can introduce you whatever part of their lifestyle you are interested in.

Running trails: There are plenty of running trails on the volcano, right outside our door.

Adventure activities: Whether you are into canopy trips/zip lining, bathing in waterfalls, hikes and climbs, horseback riding on the volcano, paragliding or other adventurous activities, there are lots of options to choose between around the lake. A daily shuttle will take those who are craving waves to El Paredón, Guatemala’s top surf destination.

Self-development activities: In San Pedro but mainly in nearby village San Marcos there is lots of yoga, meditation, cacao ceremonies, shamanic healing and temazcal sessions to choose between. Or whatever else is your sphere of interest – we probably have it here by the lake.

For teenagers: San Pedro has a thriving bar scene, pub crawls, a party boat and more if your youngsters are into partying. Horse riding, weaving/dying classes, art classes with local artists, Spanish school and the above mentioned adventure activities are more suggestions specifically for older kids. Playing soccer is also quite big here, and we are happy to arrange for our guests to join the locals in their soccer practice.

For children: There are several swimming pools and playgrounds in San Pedro that are fun for younger children. Our neighbor town San Juan has a little water park and large playground. San Marcos, a short boat ride away, has a nature park with trampolines and swimming from cliffs (for older children). Horse riding, soccer, basketball and more sports activities can be arranged for kids in all age groups. The hotel has a play area and a sand box for kids, and ‘our’ beach is super kid friendly. We have nanny service and lots of local kids around.
